Contaminated Site Press Issues  11, September, 2003

Clearly the operations of the Fremantle Lead Smelter for over twenty years early last century represents the mother of all "contaminated site issues".    Comparing the potential contaminating slags & ashes produced by a coal burning 19th century lead smelter to the castings sand wastes from the ANI Bradken foundry, where already refined metals were used to make various cast products is like comparing an M1 tank to a Mini Minor.Yet when 20 years of Govt. statements, various scientific publications and professional environmetal reports are examined, the very existence of the smelter is never addressed.
